10 Fluffy Chicken Breeds to Add to Your Flock

There are many different breeds of chicken out there, but if you are looking for fluffy chicken breeds, you’ve come to the right place.

In this post, we will discuss the top fluffy chicken breeds, some fun facts about each one, and pictures. By the end, you will be able to determine if adding a fluffy chicken to your flock is right for you!

1. Silkie Chicken

silkie chicken

Silkie chickens are one of the most popular fluffy chicken breeds on this list.

They are also one of the fluffiest chickens due to their hair-like feathers. Silkies are extraordinary chickens to have in a flock because they are typically very docile and easy to care for.

The skin underneath their feathers is black, along with their bones and other organs. They also have five toes on each foot, while most other breeds have 4.

Although Silkie chickens aren’t great at egg laying, they are however a very broody breed. Not only will they incubate their own eggs, but they will incubate other chicken eggs from different breeds as well. This makes them a great option for those looking for natural incubation.

These chickens like to stay dry, so they do best in warm, dry climates.

  • Size: 2-3 pounds
  • Color: Barred, white, black, buff, molted, red
  • Egg Laying: 2-4 per week
  • Egg Lying Age: 9+ months
  • Egg Color: Cream

2. Frizzle Chicken

frizzle chicken

Frizzle chickens are not actually a breed on their own, but they are a variation called Frizzle to describe how the feathers lay on their body.

Frizzling is when the feathers start to curl upward and outward away from the body. This is caused by an incomplete dominant gene.

The most common breeds that are prone to frizzling are Cochin, Polish, Plymouth Rocks, and Japanese Bantams.

Just like with some other fluffy chicken breeds, Frizzle chickens have great temperaments. They are known to be sweet, docile, and friendly. However, they are fairly high maintenance, making them more difficult for beginner chicken keepers.

It is also important that these chickens remain dry and warm all year round to keep them healthy and happy.

  • Size: About 6-8 pounds
  • Color: Buff, brown, black, white
  • Egg Laying: 2-3 per week
  • Egg Lying Age: 6+ months
  • Egg Color: Cream or tinted

Just like with some of the other options on this list, Cochin Bantams are not great at egg-laying.

But they are fairly broody and they enjoy being mothers to any chick of any breed.

These chickens are not very hardy and get wet easily due to the feathers on their legs. They also don’t handle the heat as well as some other breeds. They do best in climates that are very dry, chilly, and/or warm (but not hot).

  • Size: 1-2 pounds
